We will be eating corned beef and cabbage later, a tradition in my family. We will also be reading about St. Patrick and his work. For now, Jude played with a St. Patrick's Day discovery basket.
Discovery baskets are sometimes called treasure baskets, and they are used a lot for Montessori play. The baskets are filled with 5 or more items that the baby or toddler can explore with all their senses. They are sometimes themed, but they do not always have to be.
Our St. Patrick's Day discovery basket had 6 items in it:
- a St. Patrick's Day infinity scarf
- a green loofah
- a green camo rubber duck
- a piece of green felt
- a green bath turtle
- an Enchanted Rainbow playsilk
I set the basket in the middle of the playroom and waited for Jude to notice it. He was pretty busy tearing apart the shelves in the corner of the playroom, but as soon as he noticed the basket, he made a beeline for it.
Jude grabbed the turtle first and then went from there. He touched and tasted everything. We talked about each texture as he grabbed the object. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
