365: Curmudgeon Day

January 29 is a day dedicated to the grumps out there. Curmudgeon Day couldn't have landed on a more opportune day. Both Jude and I are sick with a cold, tired of being stuck in the house, and just downright grumpy. I decided to try to lighten up the mood with a play tray dedicated to our favorite curmudgeon: the Pout Pout Fish.

We started by reading The Pout Pout Fish. This book is a favorite in our house. During my pregnancy, Jay and I somehow ended up with 4 copies of the book, so we have a copy strategically located in all of the reading places in the house. If you don't already have The Pout Pout Fish, you should get it. It has the Chicka Chicka Mama Stamp of Approval (capitalized to make it look official).

Earlier in the day, I prepared the taste safe kinetic sand and the slime/putty. Both were incredibly simple to make, and I was able to make them with ingredients I already had in my pantry. At the end of the post, I will list the directions for the sand and slime! I used some bath toys that we had already to be the characters from The Pout Pout Fish. Both Jude and I had so much fun with the play tray. The sand is so soothing to just play with. The slime was less fun (I used too much corn starch), but it did smell great! Jude felt it with his hands. He threw it a little around. He tasted it. We will be using the kinetic sand for more play sessions this week! It was one of Jude's favorite activities to date!

Taste Safe Kinetic Sand

Ingredients:
  1. 5 cups of flour (any kind)

  1. Put 5 cups of flour in a large bowl
  2. Slowly add the vegetable oil
  3. Knead with your hands until mixture feels like sand
  4. Play!

Taste Safe Marshmallow Slime

Ingredients:
  1. 1 cup mini marshmallows (or a couple big marshmallows)
  2. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  3. 1/2 cup corn starch
Directions:
  1. Heat marshmallows and oil in a bowl until gooey (do this in 15 second intervals)
  2. Let it cool a little
  3. Slowly mix in corn starch until it is less sticky (the more corn starch, the less slime like it will be)
  4. Play!
