365: Indigenous Peoples' Day

October 14 is Indigenous People's Day. Indigenous Peoples' Day is a day that honors Native American culture and celebrates their achievements, history, and culture. Jude nor I are any part Native American, so I wanted to be very careful today to celebrate and educate not appropriate.
The best way I knew how to do that was through literature. Literature is always my go-to when I am not sure what to do. I did some research prior to today and purchased two books for Jude that were written by Native American authors. The first book, Loving Me (Navajo/English), is a board book that celebrates the different parts of a family in both English and Navajo. It has bright photographs of Native American children and their family members. The second book, My Heart Fills With Happiness, is a beautifully illustrated book showing things that make the main character's heart happy. It is written by a Native American author and lists some traditional objects from Native American culture.
I look forward to continuing to educate Jude in a way that celebrates the culture in a non-appropriative, age appropriate manner!
