365: Cat Day

October 29 is Cat Day. We have two cats that we love very much. We celebrated them at the beginning of our 365 journey on Mew Year's Day, and we try to celebrate them as much as possible.

We took a craftier route today to celebrate the holiday. Earlier today, we went on a nature walk with Jake and Sean and collected some nature treasures. Each week, we end up with quite a lot of nature treasures between nature walks and Tinkergarten twice, so we are always looking for creative ways to integrate our treasures into other projects.

This project was pretty simple, but it was a whole lot of fun. I'll outline the steps below.

Option #1: Contact Paper Cat
This is the less messy, less permanent version.

Materials:
1. Paper (I use watercolor paper always because the thickness is perfect for almost every project)
2. A marker
3. Contact paper
4. Tape
5. Nature treasures

Directions:
1. Draw a cat. I opted to draw a simple cat head.
2. Tape the picture to a surface. I chose vertical because of all of the benefits of vertical play. (visit my Halloween post for more information about the benefits of vertical play)
3. Tape contact paper over the cat picture.
4. Offer the nature treasures to your child by putting them out (I used an egg carton)
5. Model putting a treasure up, if needed
6. Let them play!

I set up one for myself next to Jude, so I could parallel play with him. At almost a year and a half, Jude seemed to be most comfortable with new play types if they are done with someone else playing with him.

Option #2: Cat Flower Crown
This is the more messy, more permanent version.

Materials:
1. Paper (I use watercolor paper always because the thickness is perfect for almost every project)
2. A marker
3. Glue
4. Nature treasures

Directions:
1. Draw a cat. I opted to draw a simple cat head.
2. Put a strip of glue where a flower crown would go on a cat.
3. Offer the nature treasures to your child by putting them out (I used an egg carton)
4. Model putting a treasure on the strip of glue, if needed.
6. Let them play!

This version is a lot messier, especially if your little one has not really used glue yet like Jude. This could also be done with double sided tape for less of a mess.

We hope you and your little one enjoy creating fun cat pictures together!
