365: Social Media Day

June 30 is Social Media Day. Social Media is such a large part of life today. I wanted to spend Social Media Day tipping our hats to some of the most inspirational social media accounts that influence us at Chicka Chicka Mama. To do this, I picked 3 of my favorite accounts, and Jude and I did play activities from each of their accounts.
1. Play at Home Mummy (@play_at_home_mummy)

This is my favorite instagram page. Emma does an amazing job outlining educational play for her girls. I have pulled time and time again from her activities. She is a must follow.

For this painfully hot day, we decided to do Emma's Pom Pom Soup activity. It was a nice way to cool off. I modified it a bit into a Pom Pom Pool. I offered Jude a few smaller containers and his sensory tools to play with and let him lead his play. Linc and Jude filled up containers with pom poms, tossed them at each other, and used the tools to pick them up.

2. Playful Little Learners (@playfullittlelearners)

I spend a lot of time doing Amy's activities and scrolling her beautiful rainbow feed. I'm actually part of her Play Squad, and I get a lot of really amazing play tips from her. She has four kids pretty close in age, runs the Play Squad, and runs a 1 and 2 year old sensory class. She is a wealth of information.
Since we were already outside for Pom Pom Soup, I went ahead and made Easy Concrete Paint. Jude loves a good mess, so this activity was just perfect for Jude. Linc and Jude played together by spreading it all over the ground. I offered cut up sponges with the paint but it was absorbing too much of the paint, so they used their hands instead.

3. Playtime with the Henshalls (@play.time.with.the.henshalls)

This is a newer account we follow, but Tara has a lot of taby ideas (the space between when they are a baby and a toddler/12-18 month range) that we like. We actually did two of her projects today.
The first one was the a threading activity. We used our wooden rings and Sarah's play silk  instead of bangles because that is what we had on hand. Jude much preferred pulling them off the scarves to putting them on the scarf. Either way, I appreciated his fine motor practice.
The other activity we did was a Noisy Drop activity. Jude enjoys pulling balls in the PVC pipes at tumbling, so I thought this would for sure be a slam dunk. Since Jude likes to keep me on my toes and remind me to go with the flow, he decided to change up this activity. He pulled the cardboard rolls down, played with the tape, and carried them up the pilker triangle. I prefer to be a guide on the side rather than a sage on the stage (as we used to call it in the high school I worked at), so I let him play how he wanted and he had a great time.

These are just a few of the many pages that we draw inspiration from! We hope you check them out!

365: Camera Day

June 29 is Camera Day. Jude has always been very interested in my phone, specifically the camera part. Because of this, I let Jude use my camera to celebrate and show the world through his eyes. I had to help some with button pressing, but it was a fun way to show what we did today. Below are the pictures from our aquarium adventures + some through Jude's eyes!

365: National Food Truck Day

June 28 is National Food Truck Day. To celebrate, Jude and I headed over to Cove Food Park with Quinn and Katie.
Cove Food Park is a recently opened food truck park in the East End of Cincinnati. It is open 11am-9pm on Wednesday through Sunday. Each day they post the trucks that will be there on social media, so you know what is available if you go. The trucks surround a big tent that made being outside feel comfortable despite it being 92 degrees out. The picnic tables are painted with chalkboard paint, so you can doodle a little while you eat.
Jude and I enjoyed a feast featuring three of the trucks that were there. We had pups in a cup from Bite Me Corndogs, crack fries from The Screaming Goat, and sopes, tacos, and chips and guacamole from El Rancho Nuevo Taqueria. Jude's favorite was a tie between the corn dogs and crack fries. My favorite was the sopes but the corn dog was a close second.

If you are a Cincinnatian, or even visiting, Cove Food Park is fun, different way to get lunch or dinner that satisfies the whole family.

365: Bomb Pop Day

June 27 is Bomb Pop Day. Bomb Pops were created in Kansas City, MO in 1955. They have become a summer staple throughout the over half century they have been around.
We celebrated the day by visiting our favorite local ice cream shop, Gold Top Dairy Bar. Jude got to enjoy his very own bomb pop in the most messy of fashions. The bomb pop gave us a good reason to talk about colors (red, white, and blue), textures (sticky, wet), and temperatures (cold). We also talked a little bit about melting. Learning is a lot more fun when there is a delicious popsicle involved!

365: Great Outdoors Month

June is Great Outdoors Month, so for the June 26th holiday, we decided to take our celebrations outdoors. It's been a while since I made a favorite things list, so this post will be a list of my favorite things to do outside with my 1-year old in Cincinnati!

1. Go to the park

We are west-siders through and through. We travel around Cincinnati to visit friends and do activities,  but when I can help it, we stay close to home. Our favorite west-side park (and probably park period) is West Fork Park in Monfort Heights.

The park is inclusive and accessible. There is a small shaded area. They have a beautiful colored maze, a zipline, and a tall climbing and slide area. Jude's favorite part is a small music area where he can play the chimes and xylophone. It's just a colorful and happy park.

This is where we went today for the official celebration of the holiday. It was very hot (over 90 degrees) but we made it an hour and had fun!

2. Go on a nature walk (crawl)

Jude loves dirt. He likes feeling it, picking it up, and occasionally tasting it. I like to nature this interest by going on nature walks with him. He's not quite walking yet, so I will walk with him and let him crawl around in a safe-ish area.

Our favorite place to visit nature is the Highfield Discovery Garden at Glenwood Gardens in Sharonville. They have a lot of fun little areas to crawl around in. It's home to many plants that Jude loves to look at and (gently) touch. There's also a little trail that has a fairy garden on it. It's a truly magical place.

3. Play in our backyard.

It feels like an odd thing to put as a favorite place in Cincinnati, but we have such a good backyard. It's shaded by four giant trees. There's a huge green space and a great hill to zoom down on with Cozy Coupes or bikes. We set up water tables and slides in the grass. It's also connected to Blue Rock Park to extend the fun.

4. Go to a splash pad.

There's a lot of great splash pads in Cincinnati. Our favorite is Breezy Point at Woodland Mounds in Anderson. Other than all the usual fun splash pad things, it notably has a small child area that is shaded and has smaller fountains for the younger crowd to enjoy. Jude loves splashing in the little fountains, and I love not having to worry that he's going to get run over by a larger kid.

5. Go to the zoo

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a great place to visit with children of all ages. I like it for Jude because he is able to see a variety of animals from the safety of his carrier. There's also a children's area with a small petting zoo. We also have Fiona the hippo, which clearly makes Cincinnati the best zoo!

Those are just a few of the many things we have found in Cincinnati to do outside. If you are not local to us, a quick search should pull up many splash pads, public gardens, parks, and zoos in your area.

365: Global Beatles Day

June 25 is Global Beatles Day. It is a day dedicated to the original boyband, the Beatles. We couldn't not celebrate the holiday. After all, Jude is named after the Beatles song, Hey Jude.
We spent most of the day listening to the Beatles, especially when we were playing outside. Not only did we listen to their songs, we also convince Jay to sing "Hey Jude" for Jude. We danced, laughed, and enjoyed life.
If you haven't already, go crank up a Beatles song and celebrate!

365: Please Take My Child to Work Day

June 24 is Please Take my Child to Work Day. It is a day that gives moms, specifically stay-at-home moms like myself, a chance to relax and get some child free time during the work day.
Most mornings, I joke with Jay that it is "take your child to work day", so it was a slam dunk when the day actually came around. Jay works from home as a software engineer. It wasn't practical for him to take Jude for the entire day, but to celebrate the day, Jay did take him in for his morning call.
Jude spent most of the time trying to slap the keyboard and the pictures on the video chat, but it was a lot of fun for him to get to see what his daddy does all day!

365: Public Service Day

June 23 is Public Service Day. It is a day that honors people in public service jobs that help our community run smoothly.
We decided to focus on some unsung heroes in our community, the garbage men (and women).  Jude and I talked about garbage men. Then, we did a quick play activity with a little garbage truck I picked up from a thrift store a bit ago. I placed knotted play scarves together and Jude fed them in and out of the truck. It was a great way to work on his fine-motor skills and problem solving. After we did that, Jude decided to start stacking his little animals in the car and moving it around the playroom.

It was nice to have a platform to talk to Jude about public service work and expand his vocabulary. We want to extend a special thank you to all of the public service workers out there!
